“Democracy is a process, not a static condition. It is becoming rather than being. It can easily be lost, but never is fully won.”
This quote from lawyer, judge, educator, public official, and civil rights advocate William Henry Hastie Jr. become the touchstone for our creative approach for TED Democracy. A series of talks featuring big thinkers and civic leaders who are protecting and reimagining our democracies today
We recognised that there is no perfect, fully formed version of democracy. But as William Henry Hastie Jr. compellingly suggests we can always be working towards building better. The visual system reflects this by deploying an always changing bespoke typographic system that is never fully realised. Forever under construction and in progress.
The approach to photography looks to channel moments of beauty in the everyday. Democracy is something that is all around us. All the time. Not something that occurs at the polling station every 4 years.
